Jingyi, I have my own thinking on this topic. First of all, I wouldn't categorized like and love into 2 categories. Both of them are in the same categories. Use food as example, you will like some kind of food by first try, and if that food is good, and 2nd time you try it, you will love it.
Same to human being, you will definitely like a lot of people around you. Which includes someone who is same sex as you. That doesn't means that you are homosexual, it is just a kind of feeling, "like".
For opposite sex, I would say "like" is initial, if there is a chance, both got together, experience life together, and find that they are liking each others more and more, it will become "love". You can't love someone without knowing he/her, without talking to he/her, without spending time with him/her.
Therefore, I will say that like and love is not between a line, love comes right after like. If there is no like, there wouldn't be love definitely. The problem is, how easy for you to like someone, if it is very easy, that might be temporary, but if it is hard, and finally you get to like a person, then you might have to treasure it. Since the probability is low, isn't it?
Like and Love will definitely be different, but they are closely connected to each other. Another example, "mechanical pencil and lead", both of them are different things, but it doesn't means that they are not related, they need each other, love is like mechanical pencil, without a lead, it won't work.
Lastly, I would say, this is not too hard to understand, it is very individual. Everyone define like and love in a very different way. However, no matter how different it is, people will tend to treat the person they like nicely, and the person they love with heart, more caring, more gentlely, and more understandingly. Therefore, how you define like and love is not too important, the important part is how you treat the person you like and love~
