A lot of people said that Michael Jordan could stay in the air for 2 to 3 seconds.
This means that his hang time in the air is 2 - 3 seconds.
After doing some research about this,
This is almost impossible for a normal human.
To generate a second of hang time in the air, you need to jump about 50" above the ground!
Therefore, for a 2 to 3 seconds hang time, you would need to jump about 150"! Which is about 3.8 meter.
Some people think that MJ was not only jumping vertically, but also horizontally, which was a parabola shape. Wouldn't it increases the hang time?
If you have a little knowledge in Physics, you would know the time for an object that were thrown diagonally (about 45 degree vertical) to the air would increases the hang time, the higher the horizontal (x-axis) force, the longer the object fly in the air. However, it is not exactly what we are talking about here. The hang time is extended not because of the vertical leap, but it is because of the horizontal force. For MJ's case, his horizontal force, of course would increased his hang time, but definitely, it would not be more than a 0.2 seconds.
Gravity is the main reason here. You will generally be able to impart more force to a lesser mass on the initial leap (thereby generating a higher vertical leap), but once you're in the air, the effect of gravity is the same whether you're 160 pounds or 260 pounds. In other words, two people, one 100 pounds heavier than the other, will remain in the air the same amount of time assuming they have an equal vertical leap.
Therefore, if he is able to jump about 40" (100+ cm) which could produce about 0.8 seconds hang time, his total hang time would be around 1 second.
This kind of calculation has already not exactly ONE second, how about THREE second in the air?
However, MJ did a real good job when he dunked.
He misled most of us by holding his ball when he jumped, and dunked it when he was dropping or when his vertical force been overtaken by gravity force.
Other than that, after he dunked, he hold the hoop for about 0.5 second which bought him some hang time, then he tucked his leg up so that his dropping time increases for about 0.3 seconds, so in total, it was about a 2 seconds hang time from his initial leap until he landed.
I was amazed by dunking, therefore, I went through some research and this is what I found.
Hanging in the air for 3 seconds?
Practically, almost impossible for human. Current highest NBA players hang time is about 1 second!
and this record was set by MJ who jumped 48" (about 122 cm) in the air.
